Design Within Reach

Studio Laan served as architect of record for the design and construction of modern furniture retailer Design Within Reach’s new Washington, DC store. Located in Cady’s Alley, Georgetown, the three-story showroom spanned across historic brick rowhouses at the front, to encompass modern construction at the rear.
All interior finishes were replaced; lighting and millwork are entirely new. Some spatial reconfiguration was necessary to accommodate
the retail program. A small exterior terrace was converted to a seasonal outdoor display area.
During the two month construction phase, numerous challenges were encountered, both in the historic and the modern structures. The collaborative efforts of the design team and contractors led to a successful grand opening on the owner’s schedule.
